Role Descriptions

VP Logistics

VP Logistics covers all of the planning of the back end of the competition, the behind the scene potion of the competition. As VP Logistics you will be responsible for working with VP Academic and VP Events to create a schedule for the week, including specific breakdown of individual team and executive members. You will also be responsible for transportation while at the competition for all members of the competition. Two big aspects of VP Logistics is that they are in charge of food during competition days, and in charge of technology used before and at the competition. Technology includes: setting up registration for teams, TAs and executive members; projects for presentations at competition, printing during competition, filming of presentation, events requirement such as audio and visual for gala, etc. VP Logistics is one of the most time demanding roles right before the competition and during the competition, but due to its integrated position you will work closely with all other portfolios and be in charge of the overall experience of competing teams. Although this role is hard it is also very rewarding and has many opportunities for personal development.

VP Finance

As VP Finance, you will be responsible for ensuring that the competition has sufficient funds in order to run successfully. This involves detailed book keeping of records and receipts, along with constant communication with team members to ensure that the budget is updated accordingly. You will be in charge of reviewing expense forms to ensure the club purchases are aligned with the AIBC’s goals in addition to approving proposals of purchases that your team may request. As the primary user of AIBC’s account, your role is to reconcile the club’s bank statements with the books to prevent any discrepancies. Lastly, the VP Finance will be responsible for applying for grants at the University of Alberta or external sources.

VP Events

As VP Events, you are responsible for planning and executing all the events at AIBC. That includes all the meals outside the hotel and the evening activities. You will have to create all seating and event orders. You will have to correspond with the event locations and organize the schedule for all events as well. Part of the position is coming up with new event ideas as well as creating all decorations and renting any necessary materials.

VP Delegate Relations

As VP Delegate Relations, you will have to organize invitations with AIBC Faculty Advisor, he takes a lead on what schools to invite. You will follow up with Faculty Advisor for official invitations and invoices. Ensure Faculty Advisors and delegates or competing schools are prepared with all the information they may need before the competition. You are responsible for assisting them with any travel plans and visas if requested. Create and manage deadlines for the AIBC team and delegates for deliverables you may need eg. delegate payments, booking code deadlines, events prep, registration. Recruit, train and managing Team ambassadors before and during the competition. Ensure delegates, Faculty Advisor and Team Ambassadors are communicated to during the week of AIBC and understand the schedule. Some key skills are communicating with the AIBC team to ensure you are passing along all the right information to the Faculty Advisors. Utilize your team to confirm answers to questions you may be asked. Another skill would be the ability to be timely and professional.  You are the first impression of the competition so you want to ensure you are giving a positive impression. Will typically need to reply to emails within an hour of receiving them. 24 hours is an absolute max.

VP Corporate Relations

As VP Corporate Relations, you are responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders to the Alberta International Business Competition. You are responsible for securing the funding of the competition and getting corporates engaged with the delegates during the week. This includes corresponding with current corporate sponsors and negotiating contracts with companies about what the partnership between their party and AIBC will look like.

VP Academic

As VP Academic, you are responsible for writing both the 30 hour and the 5 hour cases, revising the case rulebook and rubric as appropriate for the cases. You also have to secure and train all of the judges for the competition. They have to work closely with the logistics portfolio to plan and create a schedule for the resolution and presentation times, as well as work with the Corporate Relations portfolio to create proposals and meet with case sponsors.

VP Marketing

As VP Marketing, you are responsible for creating a consistent brand identity for AIBC documents, the website, and swag materials. You are responsible for providing the team with a consistent document design for all of the print and electronic material sent out to delegates and sponsors, keeping the website up to date, and taking photos during the week of AIBC. You are also responsible for the output of information on the Facebook page. For the most part, you will be working alongside multiple OC members to produce marketing material.

The Idea

Alberta's own business competition

The Idea

Alberta's own business competition

It all started when...

The idea for the Alberta International Business Competition came to me in 2014 after having competed in several competitions on behalf of the University of Alberta and the Alberta School of Business. I realised that, although the Alberta School of Business had several strong niche and internally focused competitions, we did not have a competition focused on showcasing the school and the province on an international level. I spent the next two years working through developing and refining my idea and selecting a strong team of dedicated individuals to help me bring my idea to fruition. I am extremely proud of our team and everything we have achieved in the last two years and look forward to seeing all the delegates from around the world experience Alberta and compete to be the winners of the inaugural Alberta International Business Competition.
